Biography
Sam Kerber, born in 1998, grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. She started her art education at a specialized public middle school for the arts; there, she developed her understanding of the art elements and principles of design. She continued to create throughout high school, and she is now pursuing a double major in chemistry and studio art at the University of Rochester.
Kerber’s inspiration to create art originally stemmed from a passion for creative problem-solving. She became incredibly involved in the process and challenged herself throughout her art creation. She is currently interested in the idea of connectedness and relationships in a broad sense. Recently, Kerber has developed a better understanding of intersectional feminism and related topics. While she does gravitate to using paint, plaster, and metal in her pieces, she plans to further explore these topics using mediums that best suit the concepts of her future pieces.
Artist Statement
I am a multidisciplinary artist exploring my experiences with anxiety and how it manifests physically and emotionally. Anxiety has made it difficult to maintain productivity and function. I use these mental blocks to push myself in my art. Perfection isn't always the most important thing when creating.
Recently, she has focused on creating pieces in acrylic and encaustic paint, but also works with steel, plaster, and wood. Kerber plans to use encaustic abstraction in a future project to represent her physical experiences when her anxiety is at its peak. This project aims to encourage the discussion of anxiety and its serious impact on those who experience it.
